One of the fundraising efforts for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention are its ‘Out of the Darkness’ walks. This August 26th, the Western PA chapter will be holding its own walk at Highmark Stadium in Station Square. The chapter has been promoting their LGBTQ+ Pride team, for members of the queer community who are attending the walk and do not have a team of their own.
While it is not something I like to think about very much, suicide is an epidemic for the LGBTQIA+ community. I have known far too many queer people who have considered suicide, and often times the stigma of their identity was a factor.
To know that there are places like that American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that recognize and want to help means so much.
Please sign up for the team if you can (registration is free) and either come show your support in person or register as a virtual walker. Either way, donate what you can. This is such an important cause for us as a society, especially for our community.
