Do you long for a stigma-free world? Perhaps a world where discriminatory behavior is not just unacceptable, but ousted? A year ago, Allies for Health + Wellbeing (formerly Pittsburgh Aids Task Force) held an evening celebrating this utopia, and on Saturday, November 18th, you will have the opportunity to indulge in this reality once again.
The evening theme is a tribute to the Roman god of Wine, Bacchus. Roman mythology places Bacchus (also known as Dionysus) as a champion for rituals of earthly pleasures. The history and visual depictions of this god have not hesitated to highlight their non-conforming gender expression, with artists often painting the god as a youthful genderless body, challenging visual representations of “man-ish” or “womanly” and quite often using the language “womanly-manish” in the titles of paintings referencing the god.
Allies for Health + Wellbeing holds this festival once a year, employing the Bacchus narrative thematically to invite inclusion and acceptance while celebrating sex positive attitudes and access to non-discriminatory healthcare.
This year, The Bacchanal brings new and returning artists to the celebration. The host of the evening is Bebe Beretta, sprinkled with performances by Princess Jafar, Dahlia Dekay, The Moon Baby, Archer Duboi, and Orchid Bloomfield. Accompanying this squad of talent will be ChadKid, reviving an inner soul to dance if you get lost in the utopian ecstasy of the evening.
Pale Horse Tattoo will be offering Bacchus themed flash book tattoos all night. You will need a few extra dollars and your skin.
The evening is a ticketed event, costing just $20 pre-sale and $25 if you decide to purchase a ticket at the door. You can find the event on Facebook here, or purchase tickets online at www.alliespgh.org. The celebration will take place from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with ticket prices including two signature drinks and light food throughout the evening, all provided by Spirit Lodge located at 242 51st Street in Lawrenceville.
Ticket sales support the performing artists, and the mission of Allies for Health + Wellbeing in providing integrated medical care, supportive human services, and community-based education for individuals living with or at risk of HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections.
Come out in druids, and indulge in a stigma-free atmosphere. The spirit of Bacchus is anticipating your energy.
